    Using ontology engineering for understanding needs and allocating resources in web-based industrial virtual collaboration systems

    In many interactions in cross-industrial and inter-industrial collaboration, analysis and understanding of relative specialist and non-specialist language is one of the most pressing challenges when trying to build multi-party, multi-disciplinary collaboration system. Hence, identifying the scope of the language used and then understanding the relationships between the language entities are key problems. In computer science, ontologies are used to provide a common vocabulary for a domain of interest together with descriptions of the meaning of terms and relationships between them, like in an encyclopedia. These, however, often lack the fuzziness required for human orientated systems. This paper uses an engineering sector business collaboration system (www.wmccm.co.uk) as a case study to illustrate the issues. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel ontology engineering methodology, which generates structurally enriched cross domain ontologies economically, quickly and reliably. A semantic relationship analysis of the Google Search Engine Index was devised and evaluated. Using Semantic analysis seems to generate a viable list of subject terms. A social network analysis of the semantically derived terms was conducted to generate a decision support network with rich relationships between terms. The derived ontology was quicker to generate, provided richer internal relationships and relied far less on expert contribution. More importantly, it improved the collaboration matching capability of WMCCM

    Non-geometric veering triangulations

    Recently, Ian Agol introduced a class of "veering" ideal triangulations for mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces punctured along the singular points. These triangulations have very special combinatorial properties, and Agol asked if these are "geometric", i.e. realised in the complete hyperbolic metric with all tetrahedra positively oriented. This paper describes a computer program Veering, building on the program Trains by Toby Hall, for generating these triangulations starting from a description of the homeomorphism as a product of Dehn twists. Using this we obtain the first examples of non-geometric veering triangulations; the smallest example we have found is a triangulation with 13 tetrahedra

    Schema Theory And L2 Reading Comprehension: Implications For Teaching

    Reading is a multileveled and interactive process in which readers construct a meaningful representation of text using their schemata.  While it has been known for some time that both content and formal schemata are necessary for a complete understanding of written texts in a reader’s first language (L1), and has been suspected to be true in a reader’s second language (L2), it is still an area that has been generally ignored by both researchers and classroom teachers.  The purpose of this paper is threefold.  The first is to give a brief overview of some of the literature that deals with schema theory as part of a reader centered psycholinguistic processing model for both native and non-native readers.  The second goal is to show how familiarity with the subject matter (i.e., content schema) as one aspect of schema theory, affects L2 reading comprehension.  The third goal is to discuss the implications of schema theory in L2 classrooms

    Virtual Impedance Impact on Inverter Control Topologies

    The different nature of the energy resources requires high reliable power inverters to supply regulated power to the end customer and to ease its integration within the microgrid. In this paper, modeling, design and control of inverters are presented for two different topologies. The study addresses the feasibility of the single loop and double loop control of inverters. The bode plot technique is used to analyze the system behavior when the inductor and the capacitor currents are used as feedback signals. The different output impedance natures affect the power sharing between inverters and stability. Therefore, a proposed virtual impedance is implemented to enhance the control performance. Simulation results are presented to show the validity of the control strategy

    An Analysis on Religious-Ethnic Geopolitics, Security and Development in Border Towns. Case Study: Sistan and Baluchestan

    Borders and border areas require security measures, which are very important to create security on the borders. The paper also analyzes the role of ethnic groups living near borderlines. Iran is an ethnically varied country and distinguishing characteristics of ethnic groups from each other in Iran is particularly concentrated on language, religion and ethnic components. These ethnic groups have been scattered as certain minority groups in border provinces and areas. The presence of Iranian nationals in the Western, Eastern and Northern borders which are contiguous with countries with the same religion and language creates by itself an appropriate context for the occurrence of ethnic crises in border areas and boundary underdevelopment is an another cause for this problem. In addition, the three components, namely religion, ethnicity, and language, should be taken into consideration in adopting policies and strategies to deal with these areas. In Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran, there are effective national strategies taking advantage of the presence and existence of religious and ethnic groups in the border towns, adopting security and development policies taking into account these two issues. They have a deep effect on regional development and national solidarity due to construction activities and infrastructure investments on the one hand and reducing insecurity and trafficking on the other hand
